Ariel Detzer, PsyD, MiT, LMHC

Dr.Detzer works with young children, elementary aged children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and parents. She particularly enjoys working with families and young people facing challenges in the areas of behavior (anxiety) and/or school functioning, learning differences, sensory integration differences, neurodevelopmental differences, autism spectrum conditions, auditory processing differences, difficulty with behavioral regulation (sometimes labeled oppositional behavior) and school refusal. Additionally she works with Tourette’s Syndrome, grief, and coping with divorce and multiple family systems. Such challenges can show up primarily at home, at school, or both.

Dr. Detzer works with clients using family systems approach, skills training, cognitive behavioral approaches, and psycho-educational tools, to teach self-advocacy, disability identity-pride, and increased regulation and coping skills. She works with individuals and family groups including parents with children and sibling pairs or groups to examine family dynamics and improve family functioning. Working from a model grounded in the Social Model of Disability, she supports clients and families in managing challenges through well-structured accommodations, IEP and 504-review, and improved understanding of client neurologic functioning. She often uses games, activities, or Jungian sand play (sand tray and symbolic miniatures) to deepen treatment, especially with clients for whom talk therapy is not an ideal modality.
